Lady Senators split pair of one-run games at Cleveland State

CLEVELAND, Tenn. — A total of four runs was scored by Walters State and Cleveland State in the first two games of their Tennessee Community College Athletic Association softball series Saturday afternoon, with both teams claiming a one-run victory.

Cleveland State opened the day with a 2-1 victory to begin the series, while Walters State's Lauren Brickey tossed a no-hitter and fanned six batters in the nightcap in a 1-0 victory for the Lady Senators to avoid a sweep.

With the split, Walters State now stands at 22-14 on the year and 14-6 in TCCAA play. The Lady Cougars are now 6-12 in league action and 13-16 overall.

In the nightcap, Brickey mowed through the Cleveland State lineup and made a 1-0 lead after one inning stand up to get the win. It was a win that almost didn't happen however, as the home team nearly hit a walk-off two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh, but WSCC centerfielder Tia Wilson robbed the Lady Cougars of a home run by catching the ball at the fence.

Emma Seagrave led the Lady Senators with a pair of singles in the win, while Sydney Dukes and Keeley Quillen both had singles in the win. Dukes singled and scored on Quillen's base knock in the first inning for the only run of the game.

In the opener, Delilah Malczewski was a the tough luck loser inside the circle, as she allowed just two earned runs on five hits in a complete-game effort.

Cleveland State scored runs in the first and third innings to take a 2-0 lead, and Walters State could only plate a single run in the fifth frame in the defeat.

Seagrave and Sydney Fox both had doubles in the contest for Walters State, while Jenica Brown and Kallyn Newport both had singles in the loss.

The two teams will close out the four-game series on Sunday with a doubleheader set to begin at noon.
