Senators baseball falls to Chattanooga State, plays for Region 7/TCCAA Championship on Saturday

GALLATIN, TN – No. 1 Walters State failed to build off of early momentum on Friday evening, falling in the first game of the Region 7/TCCAA Championship to No. 19 Chattanooga State, 9-7.

With the loss, the Senators fell to 51-9 on the season. The two teams will meet at 1 p.m. CT tomorrow with the winner taking home the Region 7/TCCAA Championship and moving on to the Appalachian District Series against Andrew College next week. 

In Friday's game, the Senators scored five runs in the first two innings but didn't score again until the bottom of the ninth. Cole McCallum led the way at the plate for Walters State with a three-run homer while Corbin Shaw knocked in two runs. Caleb Marmo had three hits, as well, and drove in a run. 

On the mound, Landon Slemp got the start and threw 6.2 innings. He gave up nine runs, but just three were earned, and struck out 10. Blake Cooper replaced Slemp in the seventh with two outs and threw the final 2.1 innings. He allowed one hit and struck out five. 

The Senators were off and rolling early in the game as Marmo and Cooper Torres reached to start the bottom of the first and McCallum gave them a 3-0 lead with his 12th homer of the season.

Chattanooga State got a run back in the second, but the Senators added two more in the bottom half of the inning as Marmo doubled in a run and then scored on an error to make it 5-1. 

However, it was all Chattanooga State from there as they scored the next eight runs to take a 9-5 lead. The Senators had one last chance in the bottom of the ninth as Shaw singled home two runs with two outs. But a long flyout ended the game.

Up Next:

The two teams will meet again on Saturday afternoon to decide the Region 7/TCCAA Championship. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. CT.
