17th-ranked Senators hit 16 3-pointers in 139-67 win over Southern Crescent Tech
MORRISTOWN, TN – The No. 17 Walters State men's basketball team quite literally could not miss a shot on Tuesday evening in the Carlyle Thanksgiving Classic.
Taking on Southern Crescent Tech, the Senators hit 16 3-pointers, 12 coming in the first half, and put up their biggest offensive night of the season with a 139-67 victory.
With the victory, the Senators improved to 8-0 on the season. Walters State now ranks third in the country in points per game, averaging 108.3.
Leading the way for Walters State in the scoring column was Jamar Livingston with four 3-pointers and 23 points. Along with Livingston, Trae Rideau had 17 points while Da'Mori Lytch and Jayden Nesbitt each finished with 16 points.
Other contributors for the Senators were Jaquavious Wallace with 12 points, Malaki Brooks with three 3-pointers and 11 points, Taquez Butler with three 3-pointers and 11 points, Carter Webb with three 3-pointers and nine points, Tyrese Stovall with eight points, Caiden Bauldwin with six points, Jaceion Coffey with two 3-pointers and six points and Mou Riiny with four points.
Southern Crescent scored the first two points of the game, but Walters State answered back with nine straight as Butler had five and Livingston and Nesbitt both scored. The lead got to 14-4 following a three from Livingston and another Nesbitt basket, and it was 19-7 when Nesbitt hit two free throws and Livingston poured in another trey.
Livingston hit yet another three a few minutes later to make it 24-9, and a 7-0 run with 12:20 to go made it 33-13. During the run, Livingston and Bauldwin made 2-pointers and Webb hit a 3-pointer. Southern Crescent scored to break the run, but Walters State responded with 15 points in a row. Lytch got things going with a basket and scored again after Livingston laid one in. The final nine points came on three straight 3-pointers, two coming from Butler and one coming from Brooks, that made it 48-15.
Brooks wasn't done yet in the half and hit another long 3-pointer, and Webb hit his second and third 3-pointers in the half, 44 seconds apart, to make it 61-26. From there, the Senators kept the pressure on and Livingston capped things off with his fourth 3-pointer of the half to help give Walters State a 73-33 lead at the break.
In the second half, the Senators picked up where they left off with the first seven points. Lytch scored four of them, and Walters State led 80-33. Southern Crescent scored right after, but four points from Rideau highlighted an 8-0 run that made it 88-35.
Walters State cruised from there, scoring 66 points in the half to pick up the 139-67 victory. In the final 20 minutes, Rideau scored 12 points while Lytch and Wallace each added 10. Nesbitt had eight points in the second half as well, and Coffey hit two 3-pointers.
