Big second half propels 16th-ranked Senators to 89-65 win over Roane State
HARRIMAN, TN – No. 16 Walters State used a 51-point second half on Wednesday to pick up an 89-65 win over Roane State.
With the victory, the Senators improved to 18-1 overall and 10-1 in TCCAA play.
Brian Carter led the way for Walters State, finishing with a season-high 20 points. Along with Carter, Jayden Nesbitt and Taquez Butler each had 11 points. Other scorers for the Senators were Carter Webb with 12 points, Jamar Livingston with nine points, Tyrese Stovall with seven points, Da'Mori Lytch with six points, Malaki Brooks with five points, Caiden Bauldwin with four points, Trae Rideau with two points and Jaquavious Wallace with two points.
It was a back-and-forth start for the two teams, and Roane State led 11-10 eight minutes into the game. The Senators finally kicked it into gear with a Butler bucket and 3-pointer and a Carter and-one that made it 18-11. Roane State hit a free throw to break the run, but Webb scored, Carter scored and Nesbitt scored to make it 24-12.
However, Roane State wouldn't go away and cut it to 25-20. Stovall got Walters State back on track with two free throws, and Webb got the lead back to double digits at 33-22 with two free throws. Walters State scored one more point in the half and led 34-27 at the break.
In the second half, the Senators started hot with a Lytch layup and Livingston 3-pointer. The lead got to 45-31 following a Webb jumper, and it was 49-36 after a Stovall slam. Roane State made a shot after, but Walters State really began to take things over after, as Carter scored four straight, Butler laid a ball in and Brooks drilled a 3-pointer that made it 56-38. Three straight points from Livingston got the lead to 63-43, and it was 69-44 following four straight by Nesbitt and a driving layup by Wallace.
From there, Carter continued to score and the lead grew to 25 at 75-50 when Nesbitt split a pair of free throws. The Senators cruised from there, and Bauldwin dunked one home to close things out for the 85-65 win.
