Vaughan finishes top 5 as Senators close Tusculum Invitational strong

CHUCKEY, TN – Led by Nate Vaughan's three-under, Walters State lit the golf course up on Tuesday afternoon in the final round of the Tusculum Invitational at Graysburg Hills Golf Course.

Coming into the final round in 11th place, Walters State jumped three spots with a team score of 292 as they finished in eighth place with a two-round score of 597 (21-over). They improved their team score by 13 shots from round one to round two. 

The host school, Tusculum, took home the title with a 568 team score (eight-under). 

Vaughan led the way for the Senators on Tuesday with a three-under, 69. Vaughan birdied holes two, four, nine and 12 in round two, finishing the tournament at two-under. That was good enough for a tie for fourth place finish. 

Along with Vaughan, AJ Rinehart bounced back from an 82 on Monday to shoot a one-under, 71, on Tuesday. Rinehart birdied the fourth, sixth, ninth, 12th, 15th and 16th holes in the round. He finished in a tie for 48th place with a nine-over tournament score. 

Rounding out the scores in round two were Jeremy Ellis (T-51), Sawyer Spoone (T-67) and JT McKenzie (T-26). 

Ellis finished the tournament at 10-over after a four-over, 76, on Tuesday. Ellis birdied holes seven and 16 on Tuesday. 

Spoone improved his score by six shots on Tuesday with a four-over, 76. Spoone birdied holes two, six and 15 as he finished the tournament at 14-over.

McKenzie was the top man for the Senators on Monday and followed up his even par with a five-over, 77. McKenzie birdied holes six and 11. 

West Georgia's Austin Fulton won the tournament at seven-under. 

Up Next:

Walters State will be back on the course next Monday at the Tennessee River Rumble at Wind River Golf Course. It will be a two-day event.
