Senators in second place after opening day of Ron Marshall Spring Fling
SCOTTSBORO, AL – Walters State got off to a strong start in its spring debut on Monday, sitting in second place after the first two rounds of the Ron Marshall Spring Fling at Goose Pond Colony Resort.
As a team, Walters State is at one-over. The Senators shot one-under in round one and followed it up with a two-over score in round two.
Maddox Butler leads the way for Walters State after the first two rounds, in a tie for fifth place at two-under. Butler shot 71 in both rounds, birdieing holes 12 and 15 in round one and holes two, seven, 11 and 15 in round two. Butler had just one bogey in his first round.
Along with Butler, Blake Dawson is tied for seventh at one-under. Dawson shot two-under, 70, in his opening round with a bogey on eight but birdies on holes 11, 15 and 18. In round two, Dawson shot one-over, catching fire on the back-nine with birdies on holes 11, 12, 13 and 15. Dawson also birdies holes three, seven and eight in round two.
In a tie for 16th is Greyson Smith, sitting at one-over after shooting two-under in round one and 3-over in round two. Smith bogeyed three of his first six holes in his opening round but birdied holes seven, eight, nine and 10 to get to under par. Smith closed the round with birdies on the 14th, 15th and 18th holes. In round two, Smith's lone birdie came on the 15th hole.
Rounding out the Walters State team were Alex Gaetz in a tie for 40th at five-over and Ayden Smith in a tie for 72nd at 13-over. Gaetz shot a 78 in round one, with birdies on the seventh and 15th holes, but followed it up with a one-under, 71, in round two. Gaetz birdied holes three, 12, 13 and 18 in his second round.
Meanwhile, Smith shot 76 in the opening round, with birdies on 12 and 17, and followed it up with an 81 in round two.
Playing as an individual, Austin Williams is in a tie for 57th at 10-over. Williams shot a 76 in round one, with a birdie on the seventh hole, and birdied holes nine and 10 in round two on his way to a 78.
