Senators lead by 23 shots after opening day of NJCAA DII Southeast District
MORRISTOWN, TN – Walters State got off to a great start in the NJCAA DII Southeast District Golf Tournament on Monday at The Country Club in Morristown, leading by 23 shots after the opening day.
As a team, the Senators shot 15-over on the day, 16-over in round one and one-under in round two. Roane State is in second place at 38-over, while Cleveland State is in third at 52-over.
Individually, Blake Dawson and Greyson Smith are tied for first at two-over. Both Dawson and Smith shot four-over in round one and followed it up with a two-under, 70, in round two. On the opening 18 holes, Dawson birdied the ninth-hole and eagled the first hole. Dawson eagled hole one in round two, as well, and birdied the third, fifth, 10th and 16th holes. Meanwhile, Smith had birdies on holes 11, 13 and 15 in round one and holes five, 10, 11 and 16 in round two.
Along with Dawson and Smith, Maddox Butler is in third place at three-over. Butler shot three-over in round one and birdied the first, fifth and 15th holes. In round two, Butler birdied the third and 16th holes and had just two bogeys on his way to an even-par, 72.
Rounding out the team were Ayden Smith in sixth place at eight-over and Alex Gaetz in 10th place at 12-over. Smith shot five-over in his opening round and birdied the fifth and ninth holes. He followed it up with a three-over, 75, in round two and birdied the first, fifth and 15th holes. Meanwhile, Gaetz shot five-over in round one with birdies on holes two and 16 and was seven-over in round two, with a birdie again on the second hole.

Walters State is back in action on Tuesday for the final round of the NJCAA DII Southeast District Tournament at The Country Club. The Senators will begin teeing off at 10:10 am ET.
