GAINESVILLE, FL – Walters State dropped its first two games of the season on Friday afternoon, falling 13-10 to No. 17 Santa Fe and 11-1 to St. Johns River State in six innings.
With the defeats, the Lady Senators fell to 0-2 on the season.
GAME ONE: No. 17 Santa Fe 13, Walters State 10
In game one, the Lady Senators overcame an 8-1 deficit and briefly took the lead, but could not hold it in the loss.
At the plate, Alayna Ross and Kacey Pillion each homered, while Nyah Mullins, Ross and Brenna Hunley each knocked in two runs. Hunley had three hits, as well.
In the circle, Lauren Ruehl got the start and threw one inning. Ruehl allowed four unearned runs on one hit. Summer Smith replaced Ruehl in the second and threw the next 4.1 innings, allowing nine runs on eight hits. Allie Jones got the final two outs for the Lady Senators, not allowing a hit in the process.
Santa Fe got on the board first in the game, scoring four in the bottom of the first. Walters State answered back with a solo shot from Pillion in the top of the second, but Santa Fe answered with four runs in the bottom of the second to grab an 8-1 lead.
However, Walters State did not quit and fought back. After Ross hit a two-run home run in the third to get the lead down to 8-3, the Lady Senators scored three more in the fourth. Those runs came on a Hunley RBI single, a Mullins sacrifice fly that scored Jordan Pena and an error that allowed Hunley to race home and make it an 8-6 game.
In the fifth, the Lady Senators took the lead. Pillion reached on an error to start things for Walters State, and she moved to second on a walk to Allie Seritt. Following a single by Pena that loaded the bases, Hunley made it a one-run game with an RBI single. It was 8-8 when Addison Beech flew out but scored Seritt, and a bases-loaded walk to Ruehl scored Pena and gave Walters State a 9-8 lead.
Unfortunately for the Lady Senators, Santa Fe scored five runs in the sixth to regain control. Walters State got a run in the seventh on a groundout that scored Pena, but that was all.
GAME TWO: St. Johns River 11, Walters State 1 (6 Innings)
In game two, the No. 3 ranked team in NJCAA DII jumped out to an early lead and never looked back.
At the plate, Beech led the way with two hits while Ross and Hunley had the other two hits for Walters State.
In the circle, Jones got the start and picked up an out while allowing four runs on three hits. Ross replaced Jones and pitched the next 3.2 innings, allowing four runs on four hits and striking out two. Smith pitched the final two innings, giving up three runs on two hits while striking out one.
