Lady Senators defeat College of Central Florida, fall to No. 8 Indian River State
MADEIRA BEACH, FL – Walters State picked up its first win of the season on Saturday, thrashing College of Central Florida, 11-4. The Lady Senators fell in their first game of the JUCO Kickoff Classic to No. 8 Indian River State, 10-1.
With the split, the Lady Senators moved to 1-3 on the season.
GAME TWO: Walters State 11, College of Central Florida 4
Walters State trailed 3-1 through three innings in game number two of the day, but the Lady Senators scored in each of the last four innings and picked up the win.
Jordan Pena led the way for Walters State with three hits and an RBI, while Michayla Franzen homered and finished with two RBIs. Alayna Ross had two hits and an RBI, as well.
Ross was also money in the circle for the Lady Senators in the game, pitching the final 4.1 innings. Ross allowed one run on five hits and struck out two. Allie Jones got the start in the circle and pitched 2.2 innings. Jones allowed three runs on three hits and struck out one.
The Lady Senators struck first in the game, as Franzen hit a solo shot in the second inning. However, Central Florida responded with three runs in the bottom of the third to take the 3-1 lead.
In the fourth, Walters State tied the game at three. Lauren Ruehl led off the inning with a single and moved to second on a passed ball. After a walk to Ross and a fielder's choice that moved Callie Ensley, the courtesy runner, to third, a double steal scored Ensley to make it 3-2. Pena then singled, and Brenna Hunley came around to score on an error to tie the game.
The fifth inning saw Walters State take the lead for good. Following two errors that allowed Addison Beech to reach third, Ruehl grounded out to second but scored Beech. Ross was next up, and she singled to score Nyah Mullins and made it 5-3.
Walters State continued its offensive outburst in the sixth, scoring two more runs. Pena got things going with a single, and she would score on an error that occurred when Allie Seritt doubled to right. The lead grew to 7-3 one batter later when Maysin Kannapin grounded out but scored Seritt.
Central Florida got one run back in the sixth, but Walters State added four more in the seventh. Those runs came on an RBI single by Pena, an error that allowed Pena and Hunley to score and an error that scored Franzen to make it 11-4.
Ross closed things out for Walters State in the bottom of the seventh, and the Lady Senators picked up the win.
GAME ONE: No. 8 Indian River State 10, Walters State 1 (5 Innings)
In game one of the day, the Lady Senators fell victim to a seven-run fourth inning.
Walters State had three hits in the game, with Ross, Pena and Franzen each collecting one.
In the circle, Summer Smith got the start and threw 4.1 innings. Smith allowed seven runs, six earned, on seven hits. Ruehl recorded the final two outs for Walters State and allowed three runs on two hits.
Walters State's lone run in the game came in the bottom of the fifth, as Franzen came around to score on an error.
