Lady Senators knock off Calhoun Community College, fall to No. 5 Wallace State
GARDENDALE, AL - Walters State rallied late against No. 5 Wallace State on Friday afternoon at the JUCO Turf Wars but fell short, 4-3. However, the Lady Senators bounced back with a 12-8 win over Calhoun Community College.
With the split, the Lady Senators moved to 5-5 on the season.
GAME TWO: Walters State 12, Calhoun Community College 8
In game two, the Lady Senators scored five runs in the seventh and stole the win late.
Addison Beech led the way at the plate for Walters State with three hits and three RBIs, while Jordan Pena collected two hits and three RBIs. Alayna Ross, Nyah Mullins and Camryn Allen each knocked in two runs, as well.
In the circle, Summer Smith got the start and threw 3.2 innings. Smith gave up six runs on six hits and struck out two. Alayna Ross replaced Smith with two outs in the fourth and threw the remaining 3.1 innings. Ross allowed two runs on three hits and struck out four.
Calhoun struck first in the game with three runs in the first and one in the second to break out to a 4-0 advantage. Walters State picked up a run on an RBI groundout by Pena in the top of the third, but Calhoun added two more in the fourth to go up 6-1.
In the fifth, Walters State began to chip away. Brittanie Layton led the inning off with a single, moved to second on a walk to Allen and to third on a single by Beech. That brought up Pena, and she made it 6-3 with a two-RBI single to center. Ross then walked to load the bases back up, and Mullins singled home two more runs to make it 6-5.
However, Calhoun got two runs right back in the bottom of the fifth. In the sixth, following a walk to Allie Seritt and a double by Allen, Beech singled to center to score two runs and cut the Calhoun lead to 8-7.
Down to their final three outs, the Lady Senators finally took the lead in the seventh. Mullins led off the inning with a single, and pinch runner Lilly Killebrew moved to second on a hit by pitch and to third on a walk. With the bases loaded, Allen came through for Walters State with a two-RBI single to make it 9-8. The lead grew to 10-8 following an RBI single by Beech, and it was 12-8 when Ross singled home two runs.
In the bottom half of the inning, Ross got two groundouts and a strikeout to end the game.
GAME ONE: No. 5 Wallace State 4, Walters State 3
In game one of the day, the Lady Senators had the game-winning run at the plate but were unable to complete the comeback.
Allie Jones had her second straight solid outing in the circle for Walters State in the game, throwing a complete game. Jones gave up just one unearned run on six hits and struck out three.
At the plate, Beech and Ross each had two hits while Ross, Lauren Ruehl and Brenna Hunley knocked in runs.
Walters State took the early lead in the game, going up 1-0 in the second inning when Hunley singled and scored Mullins. However, Wallace State answered with three unearned runs in the third to go up 3-1.
3-1 remained the score until the top of the sixth when Wallace State added another run. In the seventh, Beech and Pena singled to open things. Ross then singled to score Beech, and Ruehl hit a sacrifice fly to score Pena and cut the lead to 4-3. Unfortunately, the Lady Senators flew into a double play that ended the game.
