DALLAS, NC – Walters State battled close with No. 10 Gaston College on Wednesday afternoon but fell twice, 5-2 and 8-7.
With the losses, the Lady Senators fell to 6-8 on the season.
GAME ONE: No. 10 Gaston 5, Walters State 2
In game one, the Lady Senators outhit Gaston but were unable to pick up the win.
Addison Beech and Alayna Ross each picked up two hits in the game, and Ross smacked a home run.
In the circle, Allie Jones got the start and threw the whole game. Jones allowed five runs on six hits and struck out three.
Gaston struck first with a run in the bottom of the opening inning, but Ross homered in the second, and Maysin Kannapin followed with a single that scored Brenna Hunley to give Walters State a 2-1 lead.
However, Gaston scored three runs in the third and one in the fifth and took the win.
GAME TWO: No. 10 Gaston 8, Walters State 7
In game two, Walters State led by a run in the final inning but were not able to hang on.
Jordan Pena and Nyah Mullins each had two hits in the game, while Allie Seritt had two RBIs.
Alayna Ross got the start in the circle for Walters State and threw 6.1 innings. Ross allowed eight runs, only three were earned, on nine hits and struck out one.
Gaston scored three in the first and one in the third to take control, but the Lady Senators hit back with five runs in the fourth. Pena singled to start things, and Mullins followed up with a single. After a walk to Ross, Pena scored on a passed ball. Lauren Ruehl then singled to score Mullins, and Seritt doubled home two runs to tie the game at four. The Lady Senators then took the lead when Callie Ensley doubled to drive in Seritt to make it 5-4.
The Lady Senators extended their lead in the fifth when Beech scored on a fielder's choice and Hunley singled in Mullins to make it 7-4. Unfortunately for Walters State, Gaston got two runs back in the bottom of the fifth, and then won the game with two runs in the bottom of the seventh.
