GALLATIN, TN – Walters State fell 5-0 in game one on Thursday against Volunteer State, but bounced back and picked up a 4-3 win in game two over the Lady Pioneers.
With the split, the Lady Senators moved to 10-12 on the season and 4-2 in TCCAA play.
GAME ONE: Volunteer State 5, Walters State 0
In game one, the Lady Senators struggled to get the bats going.
In the circle, Allie Jones got the start and threw three innings. Jones gave up five runs on four hits. Lauren Ruehl replaced Jones in the fourth and threw a scoreless inning, and Summer Smith allowed no runs on three hits in two innings of work.
At the plate, Addison Beech, Alayna Ross, Brenna Hunley and Brianice Silguero picked up hits for the Lady Senators.
The Lady Senators best chance came in the fourth inning when Ross and Hunley both singled to put runners on the corners with two outs. However, a lineout ended the inning.
GAME TWO: Walters State 4, Volunteer State 3
In game two, the Lady Senators scored three runs in the fifth, and Smith was excellent in relief in the circle to lock down the win.
Beech and Kacey Pillion each had two hits in the game, and Silguero homered.
In the circle, Ross got the start and threw two innings. Ross allowed two runs on five hits and struck out two. Smith replaced her in the third and threw the final five innings, allowing just one run on four hits.
Vol State struck first with two runs in the second, but Walters State cut the lead in half in the top of the third. With two outs, Beech doubled and scored on an error to make it 2-1.
That was the score until the fifth, when the Lady Senators took the lead. Silguero led off the inning with a solo home run that tied the game, and Allie Seritt followed with a double. Beech was next up, and she singled. That brought up Pillion, and she gave the Lady Senators the lead with a two-RBI single that made it 4-2.
Vol State picked up a run in the bottom of the fifth, and then loaded the bases in the sixth. However, Smith got a groundout to second to get out of the jam and keep the score at 4-3.
In the seventh, Vol State led the inning off with a single, but a double play cleared the bases. Smith surrendered one more walk, but got a groundout to end the game.
