Seritt’s walk-off home run highlights Walters State’s doubleheader sweep of Chattanooga State
MORRISTOWN, TN – Just a week after dropping two games to Chattanooga State, Walters State returned the favor on Wednesday.
Taking on the Lady Tigers, Allie Seritt smacked a walk-off home run in game one for a 7-6 win, and the Lady Senators followed it up with a 5-2 victory in game two.
With the sweep, the Lady Senators improved to 16-16 overall and 10-4 in TCCAA play.
GAME ONE: Walters State 7, Chattanooga State 6 (8 Innings)
In game one, the Lady Senators trailed by a run going to the bottom of the eighth, but Seritt saved the day with her walk off two-run home run.
Along with Seritt at the plate, Nyah Mullins hit two home runs, doubled and drove in five runs. Addison Beech picked up two hits, as well.
In the circle, Summer Smith got the start and threw all eight innings. Smith allowed six runs on six hits and struck out two.
The Lady Senators struck for three runs in the first to jump out early. Following a walk to Beech, a single by Kacey Pillion and a fielder's choice, Mullins stepped to the plate and roped a three-run home run over the fence in center to make it 3-0.
Chattanooga picked up a run in the top of the second, but Walters State got it back in the bottom of the third when Beech singled and scored on a Mullins double. Mullins was at it again in the fifth, this time belting a solo shot over the fence in center to make it 5-1.
However, Chattanooga would not go away and tied the game in the sixth. The two teams remained tied at five after seven innings, and the game went into extras. In the top of the eighth, the Lady Tigers struck for a run. Walters State put the leadoff hitter on in the bottom of the inning, as Brenna Hunley singled to right, and Seritt ended the game with her two-run blast over the fence in left.
GAME TWO: Walters State 5, Chattanooga State 2
In game two, the Lady Senators took the lead in the fifth and held on to complete the sweep.
Beech led the way at the plate with two hits and two RBIs, while Mullins and Jordan Pena each collected two hits. Lauren Ruehl, Pillion and Hunley drove in runs, as well.
Alayna Ross got the start in the circle and threw 4.1 innings. Ross allowed two runs, one earned, on three hits and struck out two. Allie Jones replaced Ross with one out in the fifth and threw the last 2.2 innings. Jones allowed just two hits and struck out two, closing things down to secure the win.
The Lady Senators struck first in game two, scoring in the second inning when Ruehl singled home Seritt to make it 1-0. Chattanooga State tied the game in the fourth on a home run and took the lead in the fifth with a run that made it 2-1.
However, Walters State hit right back in the bottom of the fifth. Ruehl led off with a walk, moved to second on a single by Pena and to third on a single by Brittanie Layton that loaded the bases. That brought up Beech, and she gave Walters State a 3-2 lead with a two-RBI single. Pillion was next up, and she made it 4-2 with an RBI single. Three batters later, it was 5-2 when Hunley grounded into a fielder's choice that scored Beech.
From there, Jones locked down the win as she left two stranded in the sixth and one in the seventh.
