Lady Senators fall in TCCAA/Region 7 Tournament to Chattanooga State, 4-2
COLUMBIA, TN – Walters State battled late on Sunday evening against Chattanooga State in the TCCAA/Region 7 Tournament, but the Lady Senators could not get over the hump and fell 4-2.
With the loss, the Lady Senators fell to 29-21 on the season. Walters State will now play Roane State on Monday at 12:30 pm CT in an elimination game.
Addison Beech again led the way at the plate for Walters State, going 3-4. Beech is 7-8 at the plate through the first two games of the tournament. Along with Beech, Kacey Pillion and Brianice Silguero each drove in runs.
In the circle, Alayna Ross got the start and threw four innings. Ross allowed four runs on six hits and struck out two. Allie Jones replaced Ross in the fifth and threw the final two innings, allowing no runs while striking out two.
Chattanooga State scored three runs in the third and one in the fifth to break out to a 4-0 lead. However, Walters State would not go down without a fight. In the sixth, Beech doubled to open the inning, and she scored on a Silguero RBI single. Nyah Mullins then reached on an error, and Ross singled to load the bases with one out. However, the Lady Senators were unable to cash in, and the score remained 4-1.
After Jones got out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the sixth with back-to-back strikeouts, Walters State staged one final rally. Brittanie Layton got things started with a double, and she moved to third on a bunt single by Beech. Pillion was next up, and she flew out for the second out but scored Layton to make it 4-2. Unfortunately for Walters State, that was the closest they could get.
