Three score in double figures as Lady Senators take down Motlow State

TULLAHOMA, TN – Walters State got off to a quick start Saturday afternoon against Motlow State and never looked back, taking down the Lady Bucks, 90-47.  

With the win, the Lady Senators move to 1-1 overall and 1-1 in TCCAA play. The victory was also coach Jasmin Coleman's first as interim head coach.  

Walters State was led in the game by Blayre Shultz. Shultz scored 25 points on 8-12 shooting. Shultz hit seven 3-pointers in the game to go along with four rebounds and three assists.  

Along with Shultz, Madison Mccoy and Quentarra Mitchell both scored in double figures. Mccoy had 17 points and five rebounds in the game while Mitchell added 12 points, five rebounds and three assists.  

Jaida Wiggins led the team with 10 assists and five steals to go along with her nine points.  

Just like Wednesday night against Chattanooga State, Walters State got off to a quick start Saturday. Vertonia Bady started things off with a 3-pointer, and Shultz followed suit with two 3-pointers of her own. Ryann Woodley capped off the quick start with a made jumper, and the Lady Senators jumped out to an 11-1 lead.  

Motlow stopped the run with two made baskets, but Shultz was back with another 3-pointer. The Lady Senators ended the quarter with two layups from Mccoy and a shot from Mitchell, putting them up 20-11 after one.  

In the second, Akiraona Steverson converted an and-one to start the quarter, and the Lady Senators were off and running yet again. The Lady Senators outscored the Lady Bucks 22-14 in the quarter. It was the Mccoy show in the quarter with eight points. Six players scored for Walters State in the quarter, and they led by 17 at the break.  

Any chance of a comeback was put to bed in the third quarter as Walters State out-scored Motlow by 15. Mccoy and Mitchell scored the first eight points of the third while Shultz didn't miss a shot in the quarter with eight points. Coming off the bench, Kiera Hill had six points in the quarter as well.  

In the fourth, the Lady Senators played their best defense of the game, holding the Lady Bucks to 10 points. Shultz had six points while Wiggins, Maliaka Grice and Steverson had four apiece.

Walters State will be back in action on Wednesday, travelling to take on Cleveland State. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
