Lady Senators sweep TCCAA/Region VII regular season awards
GALLATIN, TN – Following their victory on Saturday in the TCCAA/Region VII championship game, Walters State came away with a clean sweep of the conferences regular season awards.
The Lady Senators Madison Mccoy was named Freshman of the Year in the East region of the conference while coach Jasmin Coleman was named Co-Coach of the Year. And, to cap it all off, Walters State's Blayre Shultz was named the league's Most Valuable Player in the East region.
Quentarra Mitchell was named to the All-TCCAA/Region VII first team as well.
On the west side, Dyersburg's Ciara Taylor shared the Freshman of the Year honor with Mccoy while Cleveland State's Evelyn Thompson was named the other Co-Coach of the Year with Coleman on the East side. Columbia State's Diamon Cannon was named the west region's Most Valuable Player.
Shultz is the first Lady Senator to receive the honor since Dulcy Fankam Mendjiadeu was named Co-Most Valuable Player during the 2018-19 season.
A sophomore from Morristown, Shultz was about as consistent as they come for the Lady Senators. Shultz averaged 19.2 points per game, third best in the conference, and shot 42.5% from the field and 35.8% from the 3-point line.
Shultz scored in double figures in every game this year, including a 29-point performance against Chattanooga State in February.
A redshirt freshman from Knoxville, TN, Mccoy was a force for Walters State off the bench this season. She averaged 12.2 points per game and shot 46.5% from the field. She also averaged four rebounds per game.
Mccoy's highlight during the regular season came in early March when she scored 22 points against Chattanooga State and then 21 points against Motlow State just three days later.
In her first season as interim head coach, Coleman has followed in the footsteps of her predecessor Dave Kragel. Coleman has led her team to a 13-3 record this season and a 9-3 record in TCCAA play. The Lady Senators won the East region regular season title and, on Saturday, the TCCAA/Region VII tournament.
Along with Shultz and Mccoy, Mitchell also received first team honors. Mitchell averaged 11.1 points per game and shot a league leading 57.3% from the field. Mitchell also averaged 7.5 rebounds per game.
