Lady Senators clinch 12th straight TCCAA Regular Season Title with win over Roane State

HARRIMAN, TN – Walters State secured their 12th straight TCCAA Regular Season Championship Wednesday evening with a 57-42 victory over Roane State.

The Lady Senators have won every single regular season title since 2010 and won the East Regular Season Championship last season when the conference split into two divisions due to COVID-19 restrictions. 

With Wednesday night's win, Walters State improved to 15-6 overall and 13-1 in conference play. 

Kiera Hill led the way for the Lady Senators with 14 points, including six in the final frame. Tyasia Reed was the only other player in double digits for Walters State with 10 points.

Other scorers in the game for Walters State were Gemariona Hollingsworth with eight, Rose Morrow, Maiya Reed and Izarria Alexander with six points each, Matty Tanner with five and Ryann Woodley with two. 

It was a sluggish start for the Lady Senators to open up the game as they trailed 14-13 after one. Hill had six points in the quarter as Walters State tried to figure out Roane State's zone defense.

In the second quarter, offense continued to come slowly for both teams as 17 total points were scored. Walters State scored 10 of those points and led 23-21 at the break thanks to a 5-0 run to end the half. Maiya Reed had four points while Tanner knocked down a crucial 3-pointer.

The third quarter was just as close as the previous two as Walters State held onto their lead and led 36-32 going to the final frame. In the fourth, Walters State put it into high gear with 19 points in the quarter, holding Roane State to 10. Hill had six points in the final frame as did Hollingsworth.

Walters State closes the regular season on Saturday, hosting Jackson State. It will be Sophomore Day with tip scheduled for 2 p.m.
