Gibbs scores 30 in No. 8 Walters State's 76-27 win over Chattanooga State
MORRISTOWN, TN – Nyjah Gibbs was practically unstoppable in the paint for the No. 8 Walters State women's basketball team on Wednesday evening.
Taking on Chattanooga State, Gibbs scored a career-high 30 points, and Raegan Starks added 20 as the Lady Senators picked up a 76-27 win.
With the win, the Lady Senators improved to 9-0 on the season and 5-0 in TCCAA play.
"We started a little flat tonight, but once we locked in, our team responded the right way and earned a strong conference win," Walters State coach Jasmin Coleman said. "Nyjah (Gibbs) was tremendous with 30 and a big rebounding night, and Raegan (Starks) really got going in the second half.
"Defensively, I loved our commitment. Holding a team to 27 points takes effort from everyone. I am proud of our group, and we'll keep building."
Along with Gibbs and Starks, Malon Smith had 10 points while Terryauna Griffin and Anaya Mulholland-Natt each added seven. Paradise Fisher had two points, as well.
The Lady Senators scored the first seven points of the game to break out to an early lead, as Starks had six points. Chattanooga State got on the board with a three, but Gibbs responded with six straight points to make it 13-3. It was 15-3 after two free throws from Smith, and Walters State led 17-5 at the end of the first after Gibbs made another basket with 15 seconds left.
In the second, Mulholland-Natt and Gibbs scored to start things off. Chattanooga State got on the board in the quarter with a basket, but Starks scored, Smith scored, Griffin scored and Fisher scored to make it 29-7. Starks had four more points in the quarter, and Walters State led 37-15 at the half.
Gibbs scored the first four points of the third quarter and then scored four more during an 8-0 run that put Walters State up 49-17. Griffin scored later in the quarter, and Starks hit a jumper from the baseline at the buzzer to give the Lady Senators a 53-21 advantage.
In the fourth, defense was the name of the game for Walters State as they held Chattanooga State to just six points. Gibbs scored 11 points in the final 10 minutes, while Mulholland-Natt hit a three. Smith scored four points, as well, and Walters State went on for the 76-27 win.
