10th-ranked Lady Senators cruise to 97-24 win over Roane State
HARRIMAN, TN – No. 10 Walters State picked up an early lead and never let its foot off the gas on Wednesday, taking home a 97-24 win over Roane State.
With the victory, the Lady Senators improved to 15-2 overall and 11-0 in TCCAA play.
Leading the way for Walters State was once again Terryauna Griffin, finishing with 32 points. It's Griffin's third straight game with 30 or more points.
Along with Griffin, Nyjah Gibbs added 23 points and Tierra Coleman finished with 18 points. Other scorers for the Lady Senators were Paradise Fisher with 10 points, Tahara Diallo with five points in her season debut, Mariana Calero Zuniga with four points, Anaya Mulholland-Natt with four points and Raegan Starks with one point.
It was all Griffin to start, scoring Walters State's first 11 points to get them out to an 11-2 lead. Roane State answered with four straight, but Walters State closed the final 3:13 of the quarter on a 15-0 run. Fisher started the run with a free throw, and she scored again following a basket by Gibbs. After a Griffin free throw, Gibbs scored five in a row to make it 22-6. The final four points of the run came on a Griffin 3-pointer and a Starks free throw that made it 26-6.
In the second, Griffin continued her strong start as she hit another 3-pointer, and Mulholland-Natt scored after to make it 31-8. The lead grew to 33-8 following another basket by Griffin, and it was 35-8 after Gibbs scored. The Lady Raiders scored four in a row to make it 35-12, but Walters State answered with 12 straight. During the run, Gibbs scored, Coleman scored three straight, Griffin hit a three and Fisher scored four in a row to make it 47-12. Roane scored one more time in the quarter, but Gibbs made a layup with 26 seconds left that made it 49-14 at the half.
Walters State opened the third quarter picking up where they left off, scoring the first 11 points. Griffin had five during the run, while Gibbs scored four points and Mulholland-Natt hit a jumper that made it 60-14. Coleman scored four points in the remainder of the quarter, while Diallo scored her first points of the season, and it was 70-18 after three.
The fourth quarter was much of the same, as Griffin scored six points in the opening four minutes. Diallo then hit a 3-pointer to make it 84-22, and it was 91-22 after five points from Coleman. The Lady Senators closed strong and picked up a 97-24 win.
