Griffin and Gibbs named NJCAA DI Women’s Basketball All-Americans
MORRISTOWN, TN – For the first time since the 2016-17 season, the Walters State women's basketball program has an NJCAA DI Women's Basketball First Team All-American.
On Wednesday, Terryauna Griffin was named one of 10 student-athletes on the NJCAA DI Women's Basketball All-American First Team. Additionally, Nyjah Gibbs was selected as a member of the NJCAA DI Women's Basketball All-American Third Team.
Griffin and Gibbs are the 32nd and 33rd All-Americans in Walters State women's basketball program history. Griffin is the first Lady Senator selected to the first team since Sara Vujacic during the 2016-17 season, and the first to be a two-time All-American since Jephany Brown in 2014 and 2015.
It was an unreal season for Griffin, who finished fourth in the country in points per game at 21.2. Griffin's 657 points on the season makes her the Walters State Single-Season Scoring record holder. Griffin scored double-digits in 29 of 31 games on the season, scored 20+ points in 19 games and 30+ points in eight games.
Along with the points, Griffin averaged five rebounds and 2.7 steals per game.
For her career, Griffin finished with 1,182 points, the Walters State All-Time Scoring record. Griffin averaged 19.1 points per game over 62 games.
Along with the All-American honor, Griffin was named the TCCAA Player of the Year, Offensive Player of the Year and an All-TCCAA First Team Member.
Along with Griffin, Gibbs was selected to the third team after a dominating season in the paint. Gibbs averaged 16.5 points per game, shot 52.6% from the field and collected 8.5 rebounds. Gibbs recorded 12 double-doubles throughout the season, scored double-digits in 24 of 31 games, scored 20+ points in 10 games and 30+ points twice.
Gibbs pulled in 263 rebounds on the season, 155 of them being offensive rebounds. Gibbs blocked 24 shots and had 44 steals.
For her career, Gibbs finished with 741 total points, shot 52.4% from the field and collected 504 rebounds.
Along with the All-American honors, Gibbs was named an All-TCCAA First Team member and the TCCAA/Region 7 Tournament MVP. Griffin was an NJCAA DI Women's Basketball Third Team All-American last season.
Griffin and Gibbs helped lead Walters State to a 28-3 record, a 20-0 record in TCCAA play, a TCCAA Regular Season Championship, a TCCAA/Region 7 Tournament Championship and an NJCAA DI Women's Basketball Tournament Elite Eight appearance.
For their careers, Griffin and Gibbs went 53-9, 39-1 in TCCAA play, won two TCCAA Regular Season Championships, two TCCAA/Region 7 Tournament Championships and made the NJCAA DI Women' s Basketball Tournament twice.
