Lady Senators sweep doubleheader from Hillsborough Community College
MADEIRA BEACH, FL – Walters State closed its time in Florida strongly on Sunday, sweeping a doubleheader from Hillsborough Community College, 6-5 and 13-2.
With the sweep, the Lady Senators improved to 3-3 on the season.
GAME ONE: Walters State 6, Hillsborough Community College 5
In game one of the day, the Lady Senators scored four runs in the first two innings and held off a late rally to grab the win.
At the plate, Michayla Franzen had three hits and drove in a run, while Alayna Ross doubled twice and had an RBI. Nyah Mullins and Lauren Ruehl each totaled two hits, as well.
In the circle, Summer Smith got the start and threw three strong innings. Smith allowed one run on three hits. Ruehl replaced Smith in the fourth and threw the final four innings. Ruehl gave up four runs, two earned, on four hits and struck out four.
Walters State started strong, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first. Addison Beech led the inning off with a single, moved to second on a passed ball, to third on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch. Ross then walked, moved to second on a wild pitch, reached third on an error and scored on an RBI single by Franzen to make it 2-0.
In the second, Maysin Kannapin reached second on an error and scored on an RBI single by Jordan Pena. Ross then grounded out but scored Allie Seritt, who walked earlier in the inning, to make it 4-0.
Hillsborough picked up a run in the fourth and two more in the fifth to cut the lead to 4-3, but Walters State answered back with a run in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single by Mullins. The Lady Senators scored one more time in the game, in the sixth, when Ruehl singled to score Ross. Hillsborough picked up two runs with two outs in the seventh and had the tying run on first, but Ruehl got a lineout to shortstop to end the game.
GAME TWO: Walters State 13, Hillsborough Community College 2 (5 Innings)
In game two, the bats were hot for the Lady Senators as they completed the sweep.
At the plate, Walters State totaled 14 hits. Ross led the charge, going 3-3 with two RBIs, while Ruehl had two doubles and two RBIs. Six other Lady Senators drove in runs in the game.
In the circle, Carla Burge made her season debut and threw a complete game. Burge allowed two runs, one earned, on four hits and struck out one.
Things started early for the Lady Senators in the game, scoring three runs in the first. Those runs scored on an error that allowed Ross to cross home, an RBI single from Mullins and a bases-loaded walk to Brittanie Layton that scored Franzen.
Hillsborough picked up a run in the bottom of the first, but Walters State got it back in the top of the second when Ross doubled in Beech to make it 4-1. In the third, Walters State blew the game open with five runs. Beech started things with a fielder's choice that scored Brenna Hunley. Pena then singled home Seritt to make it 6-1, and Ross singled home Beech to make it 7-1. The final runs of the inning came on a two-RBI double by Ruehl that made it 9-1.
The scoring concluded for Walters State in the fourth with four more runs. Callie Ensley singled home the first run of the inning, and two straight passed balls scored Layton and Ensley. Brianice Silguero then singled in Camryn Allen to make it 13-1. Hillsborough picked up a run in the bottom of the fifth, but that was all.
