Lady Senators collect 26 hits in doubleheader sweep of Jackson State
JACKSON, TN – Walters State hit early and often on Friday against Jackson State, picking up 12-2 and 8-6 wins over the Green Jays.
With the sweep, the Lady Senators improved to 12-12 on the season and 6-2 in TCCAA play.
GAME ONE: Walters State 12, Jackson State 2 (6 Innings)
In game one, the Lady Senators scored six in the third and six in the sixth to end things early.
Brianice Silguero led the way for Walters State at the plate, going 2-4 with four RBIs, while Allie Seritt homered and drove in two runs. Brenna Hunley and Lauren Ruehl each collected two hits, as well. Walters State had 12 hits in the game.
In the circle, Summer Smith got the start and threw four innings. Smith allowed two runs on eight hits. Allie Jones pitched the final two innings and did not allow a hit.
Jackson State took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but Walters State created some separation in the top of the third with six runs. Beech led off with a double, stole third and scored on a sacrifice fly by Nyah Mullins. Ruehl and Hunley then singled with two outs, and Silguero scored them both with a double that made it 3-1. Following a walk to Jordan Pena, Seritt singled, and Silguero scored on an error. The final two runs of the inning came on an error that made it 6-1.
Jackson State got one run back in the fourth, but the Lady Senators capped things off with six more runs in the sixth. All six runs came with two outs as Hunley singled home Beech, Silguero singled in Ruehl and Hunley, Pena singled to score Callie Ensley and Seritt smacked a two-run home run that made it 12-2. Jones set Jackson down in the bottom of the inning to end the game.
GAME TWO: Walters State 8, Jackson State 6
In game two, the Lady Senators picked up 14 more hits and completed the sweep.
Pena picked up three hits in the game to lead the way, while Beech, Mullins and Silguero each had two hits. Hunley drove in two runs, as well.
Ruehl got the start in the circle and threw 1.1 innings, giving up six runs, five earned, on four hits while striking out four. After Jones faced two batters, Smith came in and threw the final 5.2 innings. Smith didn't allow a run and gave up just two hits.
Walters State got on the scoreboard first in game two, scoring two runs in the first. Pillon doubled with one out to get things going, and Mullins followed with a single. Following a strikeout, Hunley stepped up and singled to center to score both runners.
Jackson picked up a run in the bottom of the first, but Walters State went up 4-1 with two more runs in the second. Those runs came on an error that scored Maysin Kannapin and an RBI double by Mullins.
However, the Green Jays scored five in the bottom of the second to go up 6-4. In the third, the Lady Senators tied the game with two runs. Silguero opened the inning with a single, and Pena followed with a double. Following a walk to load the bases, Brittanie Layton stepped up and singled home a run to make it 6-5. Beech was next up, and she tied the game with a sacrifice fly that scored Pena.
The fourth inning saw the Lady Senators take the lead for good when Pena singled in Camryn Allen to make it 7-6. Walters State scored one more run, a solo home run by Ruehl in the sixth, and Smith handled the rest in the circle to pick up the victory.
