Lady Senators offense continues to impress in doubleheader sweep of Columbia State
COLUMBIA, TN – One day after scoring 20 runs on 26 hits, the Walters State offense was at it again on Saturday, picking up two 12-2 victories over Columbia State.
With the sweep, the Lady Senators improved to 14-12 overall and 8-2 in TCCAA play.
For the weekend, Walters State scored 44 runs on 56 hits in 24 innings.
GAME ONE: Walters State 12, Columbia State 2 (5 Innings)
In game one, the Lady Senators collected 16 hits in the win.
Addison Beech, Allie Seritt and Brianice Silguero each had three hits in the game, while Silguero homered and drove in four runs. Nyah Mullins and Maysin Kannapin both had two hits and two RBIs, as well.
In the circle, Allie Jones got the start and threw 2.1 innings. Jones allowed two runs on two hits and struck out two. Lauren Ruehl replaced Jones with an out in the third and threw the next 1.2 innings, allowing no runs on no hits, and Carla Burge threw a scoreless fifth inning to end the game. Burge struck out one.
Walters State scored a run in the first, when Beech singled, moved to third on a Seritt double and scored on a Silguero sacrifice fly. The lead grew to 2-0 in the second when Kannapin singled home Mullins, who singled earlier in the inning, and it was 3-0 when Beech singled to score Kannapin.
In the third, two more runs came across for Walters State, as Silguero singled home Seritt, who led off the inning with a single, and Mullins hit a sacrifice fly that scored Lilly Killebrew to make it 5-0. Columbia State picked up two runs in the third, but the Lady Senators closed out the scoring with seven runs in the fourth. Those runs came on an error that scored Brittanie Layton, an RBI single from Seritt, a two-run home run from Silguero, a Pena RBI double, a Mullins RBI double and a Kannapin RBI double that made 12-2. Burge set the Lady Chargers down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the fifth to close things out.
GAME TWO: Walters State 12, Columbia State 2 (6 Innings)
In game two, Beech and Seritt each picked up three more hits in the six-inning win.
Beech homered and drove in two runs, as well, while Seritt had one RBI. Kacey Pillion and Ruehl also homered in the game, while Jordan Pena and Silguero each collected two hits.
In the circle, Ruehl got the start and threw two innings. Ruehl gave up one run on two hits and struck out two. Summer Smith replaced Ruehl in the third and threw the next three innings, allowing an unearned run and no hits while striking out one. Burge pitched the sixth inning and again threw a scoreless inning, striking out one in the process.
Walters State jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first thanks to an RBI single by Seritt and an error that scored Seritt. Columbia scored one in the bottom of the first, but the Lady Senators scored three in the top of the second. Pena led off the inning with a double, and she scored on an RBI single by Layton. Beech was next up, and she homered over the fence in center for a two-run home run that made it 5-1.
Columbia picked up a run in the third to make it 5-2, but Walters State scored seven in the top of the sixth to put the game out of reach. Ruehl got the scoring started with a two-run home run, and Pillion followed three batters later with a two-run blast that made it 9-2. The final three runs crossed the plate on a Mullins two-RBI double and a Pena RBI single that made it 12-2.
