Lady Senators win sixth straight conference game, sweep doubleheader from Pellissippi State
MORRISTOWN, TN – Walters State hit the ball well and pitched the ball well on Saturday afternoon, sweeping a doubleheader from Pellissippi State, 8-0 and 13-4.
With the sweep, the Lady Senators improved to 21-17 overall and 14-4 in TCCAA play.
GAME ONE: Walters State 8, Pellissippi State 0 (5 Innings)
In game one, Kacey Pillion hit two home runs while Summer Smith threw her second complete game shutout of the week.
Along with the home runs, Pillion drove in five of the eight runs in the game. Lauren Ruehl also homered and drove in two runs, while Nyah Mullins picked up two hits.
In the circle, Smith threw all five innings and allowed just four hits while striking out one and walking one.
Following a scoreless top of the first, Addison Beech was hit by a pitch to lead off the bottom of the inning, and Pillion followed with a two-run home run. 2-0 was the score until the bottom of the third when Mullins doubled with two outs and scored on an error to make it 3-0.
Smith threw a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the fourth, and Walters State added to its lead in the bottom of the inning. Jordan Pena led off the inning with a single and moved to second on a Beech single. Pillion was next up, and she homered for the second time, a three-run bomb over the fence in center that made it 6-0. Brianice Silguero followed Pillion with a walk, and Ruehl made it 8-0 with a two-run shot.
From there, Smith worked around a leadoff single in the fifth to end the game.
GAME TWO: Walters State 13, Pellissippi State 4 (5 Innings)
In game two, Walters State had 15 hits to help complete the sweep.
Beech led the way, going a perfect 3-3 at the plate with a home run, and Ruehl homered once again. Alayna Ross had two hits and two RBIs, and Camryn Allen had two hits and two RBIs. Lilly Killebrew tripled and drove in two runs, as well.
In the circle, Ross got the start and threw 4.2 innings. Ross allowed four runs on three hits and struck out five. Allie Jones got the final out of the game, a strikeout.
Beech got things going in the bottom of the first with a leadoff double, and Ross singled her home two batters later. Mullins followed with a double to put runners on second and third, and Brenna Hunley drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. The final run of the inning came when Allen doubled to left to score Mullins and made it 3-0.
In the second, the Lady Senators tacked on two more runs as Ross singled home Beech, who singled earlier in the inning, and Mullins flew out but scored Ruehl to make it 5-0. In the fourth, Walters State's first two hitters, Beech and Ruehl, hit back-to-back home runs to make it 7-0. Allen doubled for the second time in the game later in the inning, and she scored Ross. Michayla Franzen then singled home a run to make it 9-0, and Killebrew tripled to right to score Allen and Franzen. The final two runs of the inning came when Silguero doubled home Killebrew, and Smith grounded out but scored Silguero to make it 13-0.
Pellissippi scored four runs in the fifth, but that was all as Walters State completed the sweep.
