Ross’ complete game helps Lady Senators earn split with Roane State
MORRISTOWN, TN – Alayna Ross threw a complete game in game two on Saturday against Roane State, helping Walters State to a split with the Lady Raiders. Roane State took a 7-3 win in game one, but the Lady Senators snatched a 4-1 victory in game two.
With the split, Walters State moved to 22-18 overall and 15-5 in TCCAA play.
GAME ONE: Roane State 7, Walters State 3
In game one, Walters State led 2-0 after three innings but could not hold on for the win.
Addison Beech and Lauren Ruehl led the way, each with two hits and an RBI. Allie Seritt homered, as well.
In the circle, Summer Smith threw all seven innings, with Lauren Ruehl throwing to three batters in the fourth before Smith re-entered. Smith allowed five runs, three earned, on 13 hits and struck out two.
Walters State got on the board first, as Seritt hit a solo home run. In the third, the Lady Senators tacked onto their lead when Beech doubled, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on a Ruehl RBI single to make it 2-0.
However, Roane State scored three in top of the fourth to take the lead. In the bottom of the inning, Jordan Pena and Brittanie Layton walked to put two on with two out. That brought up Beech, and she singled to score Pena to tie the game at three.
Unfortunately for Walters State, Roane scored one in the fifth, two in the sixth and one in the seventh to take the win.
GAME TWO: Walters State 4, Roane State 1
In game two, Ross threw a complete game to lead the Lady Senators to the win.
At the plate, Beech picked up two more hits while Kacey Pillion homered and had two hits. Layton picked up two hits, as well.
In the circle, Ross threw all seven innings. She allowed an unearned run on six hits and struck out three.
Like the first game, Walters State got on the board first with a run in the opening inning. Beech led things off with a single and moved to third on a single by Brenna Hunley. That brought up Nyah Mullins, and she scored Beech with a groundout.
1-0 was the score until the bottom of the fourth when the Lady Senators added on, as Pillion smoked a solo home run to make it 2-0. Roane got a run in the top of the fifth, but Walters State hit back with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Michayla Franzen walked to open the inning, and Pillion followed with a single. After a single from Ross, Seritt bunted for a hit and scored Franzen in the process. Layton was next up, and she singled to left to score another run to make it 4-1.
That was the final score, as Ross worked around a single and walk in the seventh to end the game.
