Offense shines in Lady Senators' sweep over Motlow State
TULLAHOMA, TN – Walters State kept pace in the TCCAA standings on Saturday, sweeping a doubleheader over Motlow State. The Lady Senators won 7-3 in game one and 11-3 in game two.
With the sweep, Walters State improved to 24-20 overall and 17-7 in TCCAA play.
GAME ONE: Walters State 7, Motlow State 3
In game one, the Lady Senators homered three times to pick up the win.
Brianice Silguero, Lauren Ruehl and Kacey Pillion each smacked home runs for Walters State. Pillion drove in three runs, and Addison Beech had two RBIs.
In the circle, Summer Smith got the start and threw 5.1 innings. Smith allowed an unearned run on seven hits and struck out one. Laruen Ruehl replaced Smith with an out in the sixth and threw the next inning, striking out two while not allowing a hit. Carla Burge got the final two outs for the Lady Senators and gave up two unearned runs.
It was a scoreless game until the fourth, when Silguero and Ruehl hit back-to-back solo home runs to put the Lady Senators in front. In the fifth, Walters State added to its lead. Jordan Pena led off the inning with a single, and Nyah Mullins followed with a single. Following an out, Beech stepped up and singled in Pena to make it 3-0. Pillion was next up, and she increased the lead to 4-0 with a sacrifice fly that scored Mullins.
Motlow State cut into the lead with a run in the fifth, but the Lady Senators got some insurance with three runs in the seventh. Again, it was Pena who got things started, leading off with a walk. Camryn Allen then singled to move Pena to third, and Beech grounded out to score Pena. Pena stepped to the plate next, and she smoked a two-run home run to make it 7-1. Motlow State got two runs in the seventh, but that was all.
GAME TWO: Walters State 11, Motlow State 3 (5 Innings)
In game two, Walters State scored in every inning.
At the plate, Brenna Hunley led the way with a hit and four RBIs. Pena added two hits and two RBIs, and Allen and Mullins both drove in two runs.
In the circle, Allie Jones got the start and threw four innings. Jones allowed three runs, one earned, on five hits and struck out two. Burge threw the final inning, allowing one hit and no runs.
The Lady Senators quickly got on the board in the opening inning, as Beech singled, moved to third on an error and scored on a Hunley sacrifice fly. In the second, Walters State made it 4-0 when Allen scored Pena on a sacrifice fly and Mullins doubled home two runs.
Motlow State cut the Walters State lead in half with two runs in the bottom of the second, but Walters State got those runs back in the top of the third on an error that scored Lilly Killebrew and an Allen single that drove in Pena to make it 6-2.
Motlow scored one final run in the third, but Walters State responded with three runs in the fourth. Those runs came on a Hunley sacrifice fly that scored Maysin Kannapin and a two-RBI double from Pena that made it 9-3. The Lady Senators' final two runs scored in the fifth on a Hunley two-RBI single.
