Lady Senators pick up third straight sweep, take down Roane State
MORRISTOWN, TN – Walters State continued to play some of its best volleyball of the season on Tuesday evening, sweeping Roane State 3-0 (25-11, 26-24, 25-13).
With the win, the Lady Senators improved to 10-11 overall and 5-4 in TCCAA play. Walters State has won three straight, and all three wins have been sweeps.
In the opening set, Walters State started quick with a kill and block from Veda Barton and a kill from Kara Coggins. Annah Cate Hyatt picked up a kill to make it 4-1, and it was 7-5 following a kill by Davanie Tarleton. The Lady Senators stayed slightly ahead from there and then scored 11 points in a row to go up 20-9. During the run, Barton had two kills and a block while Coggins added two kills.
From there, the Lady Senators cruised, and Hyatt picked up a kill to close the set out at 25-11.
The second set was much closer as Roane State led early. Walters State briefly took a 7-6 lead after back-to-back kills by Tarleton and Madison Haynie, but Roane State charged ahead and led 11-8. Not deterred, Walters State tied the set up thanks to a kill from Coggins and ace by Hyatt.
The two teams went back-and-forth from there until Tarleton had a kill and block that made it 18-15 in favor of Walters State. However, Roane State would not go away, and the set was tied at 19 and 20. Walters State got some separation at 23-20, thanks to back-to-back kills from Haynie, but Roane State scored three straight to tie the set back up. After Roane State fought off one set point that made it 24-24, Walters State converted on their second attempt and won the set, 26-24.
The final set was similar to the opening set, and Walters State led 11-6 after two straight aces by Tarleton. The lead then grew to 14-6, and it was 17-9 after a kill by Coggins and an ace by Hyatt. Barton picked up a block later in the set to make it 20-12, and then had a kill that upped the lead to 23-12. Roane State scored one final point, but Walters State closed the set and match out at 25-13.
