Lady Senators roar back in third set to complete sweep over Jackson State
MORRISTOWN, TN – Walters State put together an inspired performance on Friday evening against Jackson State, dominating the first two sets of the match before completing an impressive comeback in the third set to sweep things, 3-0 (25-15, 25-16, 29-27).
With the win, Walters State improved to 8-11 overall and 3-4 in TCCAA play.
After easily taking the first two sets of the match, the Lady Senators led 10-6 in the third set. However, Jackson State scored 13 straight points to take a commanding 19-10 lead.
Showing unbelievable fight, the Lady Senators slowly began to chip away. It started with three straight points, included in that was an ace by Davanie Tarleton. Jackson broke the run with a point, but the Lady Senators answered back and cut it to 20-16 on Annah Cate Hyatt's serve.
Walters State continued to chip away, getting it down to 21-18. At 22-18, the Lady Senators went on a run with Lilabeth Jordan on serve. Jordan had an ace, Isabelle Brickey had a kill, Veda Barton had a kill and Tarleton had a block that gave Walters State a 24-22 lead.
Jackson State scored two points to tie it up and had set point at 25-24, 26-25 and 27-26 but could not convert. The Lady Senators got match point following an error from the Green Jays, and Walters State converted their chance to win the set and match.
The first and second sets of the match were not as close as the final. In the opening set, Walters State charged ahead 4-1 and then led 7-4 following a kill from Barton. A kill from Madison Haynie and an ace from Tarleton made it 10-6, and it was 12-8 following a kill by Kara Coggins. The Lady Senators would continue to charge and led 17-10.
Jackson State tried to rally, but a kill by Coggins and an ace from Hyatt made it 21-14. Jackson State scored one final point before a kill and block from Barton and a kill from Coggins closed the set out at 25-15.
In set two, Walters State scored five of the first six points thanks to kills from Barton and Tarleton and an ace by Payton Brown. The lead stayed around five and was 12-7 before Walters State scored six straight to go up 18-7. During the run, Coggins had three more kills while Barton tallied two kills. Brickey got in on the fun later in the set with two kills, and Tarleton added two as well and the Lady Senators cruised to the 25-16 set win.
