Lady Senators fall in TCCAA/Region 7 Semifinals to Cleveland State
MORRISTOWN, TN – Fourth-seeded Walters State saw its season come to an end on Friday in the TCCAA/Region 7 Volleyball Tournament Semifinals, falling 3-0 (25-20, 25-15, 25-19) to top-seeded Cleveland State.
With the loss, the Lady Senators closed the season at 13-17.
Leading the way for Walters State in the match was Veda Barton with 11 kills. Barton finished her Walters State career with 577 kills, tying Lauren Mims for the program record in kills.
Along with Barton on Friday, Madison Haynie had seven kills while Kara Coggins added six. Other contributors were Annah Cate Hyatt with 30 assists, Davanie Tarleton with five kills and Mykanna McMahon with three aces.
In the opening set of the match, Cleveland State built a 15-9 lead. Walters State grabbed some momentum after kills by Barton, Isabelle Brickey and Tarleton and then cut the lead to 16-15 following a block by Tarleton and a kill by Barton. Cleveland State scored the next four points to go back up by five, but Coggins had two kills and Tarleton an ace to make it 21-19. Unfortunately for Walters State, that would be as close as they would get as Cleveland State picked up a 25-20 win.
Cleveland State again got up early in set two, but Walters State tied the set at five following back-to-back kills by Barton and a block by Tarleton. Cleveland State would take back the lead, though and led 13-7 before Walters State went on a run to cut it to 14-12. However, the Cougars were not shaken and went back ahead 18-13. Coggins and Barton had kills later in the set, but Cleveland State would take it, 25-15.
In set three, Walters State were the ones who broke out early as they led 6-2 thanks to two aces from McMahon and a kill by Brickey. The lead was 7-4 following a kill from Barton, but Cleveland State eventually tied things at 10. Walters State got the lead back on a block by Tarleton, but Cleveland State tied it at 11 and 12 before taking the lead for good at 13-12. Walters State got three kills from Barton and a kill each from Tarleton and Haynie in the second half of the set, but Cleveland State won the match with a 25-19 win.
